Costumes of Custom

The archetypal cup is an iconic form, instantly recognisable for what it is and what it does, but appearances can be deceiving.

This series of seemingly useless cups with uncompleted forms devoid of bottoms, aim not to function as drinking vessels but more like an actors prop in a theatre. Their role is to portray an action to an audience taken at face value, before revealing their true falsities.

Their flatness, and purposefully unadjoining sides, suggests they are cut-out of something and then self-assembled like a cardboard model. The thinness and fragility of the walls, decorated with drawn ink decals have a folded paper quality, reminiscent of the "paper dollies" I had as a child.
